Portless

Stable local URLs instead of port numbers

What it is

Portless is an open-source tool from Vercel Labs that makes local dev servers reachable under fixed names such as myapp.localhost instead of shifting ports. It picks a free port, passes it on to Next.js, Vite, Astro, Express and other frameworks, and sets up HTTPS with HTTP/2 using a locally trusted certificate. With Git worktrees the branch is added as a subdomain, so every worktree gets its own address.

Install
npm install -g portless
Why it made the cut
  • HTTPS with a locally trusted certificate
  • A subdomain of its own for every Git worktree
  • Share on the LAN or through Tailscale and ngrok
